Voodoo doll stuffed peppers Halloween recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 medium green or red bell peppers (shorter, squatter peppers work best for the body shape)
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup cooked white or brown rice
  • 1 cup marinara or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese
  • Fresh mozzarella slices and sliced black olives (for the heart decoration)
  • Wooden cocktail picks or thin pretzel sticks (to act as the “voodoo needles”)

Instructions

1. Prep the Peppers

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Slice the tops off the bell peppers and scoop out the seeds and membranes.
  • Carefully carve a small heart shape out of the front of each pepper using a small paring knife.

2. Make the Filling

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground meat and diced onion until the meat is fully browned and onions are translucent.
  • Add the minced garlic, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in the cooked rice and marinara sauce, letting it simmer for 3 to 4 minutes so the flavors meld together. Remove from heat.

3. Stuff and Bake

  • Spoon the meat and rice mixture firmly into each bell pepper, pressing it down slightly. Make sure a little bit of the red/orange filling peeks through the carved heart cutouts.
  • Place the peppers upright in a baking dish.
  • Bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the peppers are tender and the filling is piping hot.
  • You can place the carved top lids right next to the peppers on the baking dish for the last 10 to 15 minutes of baking so they soften up, then simply place them back on top of the stuffed peppers right before serving. Alternatively, because the tops cook much faster than the stuffed body of the pepper, some home cooks prefer to quickly steam or roast them separately for just a few minutes so they keep their vibrant color and firm shape, then pop them back on top for the final look.

4. Add the Finishing Touches

  • Remove the peppers from the oven.
  • While still warm, place a small cutout of fresh mozzarella inside the carved heart shape on each pepper, using a bit of black olive for the center to create an “anatomical heart” effect.
  • Take your wooden cocktail picks or pretzel sticks and pierce them directly through the sides and shoulders of the peppers to complete the voodoo doll look.

Chef’s Tip

For an extra gory presentation right before serving, drizzle a small amount of warm marinara sauce down from the “heart” and around the “needles” to mimic bleeding effects.

These Voodoo Doll Stuffed Peppers are sure to be the standout star of your party. Whether you are hosting a haunted house dinner or simply looking for memorable Halloween recipes to try out this season, this fun and delicious Halloween recipe delivers on both spooky atmosphere and flavor.
